A Homeschooling Mother’s Heart & Encouragement

A Homeschool Mother’s Heart & Encouragement: Finding Joy, Faith, and Grace in the Everyday
One of the greatest gifts of the homeschooling community is hearing the real stories behind the routines — the joys, the struggles, and the steady faith that carries families through each season and the encouragement from each mother's heart.
Today, I’m honored to share an interview with Alyssa of @mercyfarms, a homeschooling mother from Kingsville, Missouri, who is faithfully educating her seven children while anchoring her days in Scripture, prayer, and togetherness with the heart to provide encouragement to homeschooling mothers.
Her words offer encouragement, honesty, and practical wisdom for homeschooling mamas walking a similar path.
Meet Alyssa of Mercy Farms- The heart behind this mother's encouragement
Name: Alyssa (@mercyfarms)
Location: Kingsville, Missouri
Alyssa and her husband are homeschooling a beautifully busy household with children ranging in age from 14 down to 2 years old:
Ages: 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, and 2
Favorite Parts of Their Homeschool Curriculum
When asked what parts of homeschooling she enjoys most, Alyssa’s answer centers on togetherness.
“I really enjoy our morning time — Bible, Catechism, and singing hymns. As well as our History! Really all the things we can do all together, I seem to enjoy the most!”
There is something powerful about shared learning, especially in a large family. These collective moments set the tone for the day and ground their homeschool in faith and connection.
The Highs of Homeschooling & Her Heart Behind It
Like many homeschooling parents, Alyssa treasures the moments when learning truly clicks for her children.
“The joys of witnessing things making sense or just clicking for a child. To be there when there is a struggle and reaping the joys of seeing them succeed are certainly highs of homeschooling.”
She describes the privilege of walking alongside her children — encouraging them through challenges, cheering them on, and witnessing their growth.
“To be the one encouraging and cheering them on to press on and not to give up. These years I will never forget!”
The Lows — and Where Strength & Encourgament Is Found
Homeschooling is not without its hard days, and Alyssa speaks honestly about the emotional weight that can come with the calling.
“Struggling with feeling inadequate. Lies and dark clouds can so quickly overwhelm my weary heart.”
What sustains her is returning again and again to the truth of God’s Word.
“So thankful for God’s Word to combat those feelings of doubt and to encourage my heart to be faithful in this journey He has called us to.”
She shared several Scriptures that anchor her during those seasons:
“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” — Psalm 73:26 ESV
“But he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” — 2 Corinthians 12:9 ESV
“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” — 1 Corinthians 15:58 ESV
“It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” — Deuteronomy 31:8 ESV
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28 ESV
How She Structures the Day With Multiple Ages
With children across many grade levels, structure and rhythm are essential.
Alyssa explains:
“We start our days with gathering all together for morning time — Bible, Catechism, our hymns, memory work, and history.”
After morning time, the day naturally divides:
- Older children work on Latin, math, grammar, logic, and writing
- Alyssa works closely with the younger children on reading, math, and grammar
- Throughout the day, she supports each child as needed, especially when introducing new lessons
This flexible structure allows for both independence and individualized attention.
Practical Encouragement for Homeschooling Moms
When asked what advice she would give other homeschooling mothers, Alyssa offers gentle wisdom rooted in grace.
“Take a deep breath and truly try to enjoy the days!”
She acknowledges the reality of hard days, tears, and challenges — but reminds moms that flexibility matters.
“If you need to walk away from the books and do something fun or creative or go for a walk, know that that is ok! The books will always be there waiting.”
Her perspective is one many moms need to hear:
“Instilling a love for learning is far more valuable than checking off a list. Do not hinder that love by overwhelming either party.”
How We Can Pray for Their Family
As they approach the end of the school year, Alyssa shared a simple and heartfelt prayer request:
“Pray that we would finish off the school year strong — with happy hearts and cheerful attitudes — knowing that all of our works and efforts are for the Lord!”
A Final Word of Encouragement
Alyssa’s story is a reminder that homeschooling is not about perfection — it’s about faithfulness, presence, and trust in the Lord’s leading.
Whether your days feel full of joy or heavy with doubt, you are not alone. May her words encourage you to rest in grace, lean into community, and remember that your labor — done unto the Lord — is never in vain.
